FAQs

WHICH CLASS IS RIGHT FOR ME?

That depends on your goals and experience level—

  • If you have zero experience in video production and are just looking to have fun learning a new skill, FILMMAKING FOR EVERYONE is right for you. This class teaches the the basics of camera, lenses, lighting, and video editing, but does not focus on mastery. The goal of this class is to get you out there shooting, to prove to yourself you can and to have fun doing it! This class requires some sort of camera (even just a smartphone will work!) and a computer with access to editing software (we teach on Premiere Pro which you can get a one month subscription to RIGHT HERE!)

  • If you have some experience in any stage of the video production/filmmaking process and are looking for guidance and insight into bringing your ideas to life on your own, DIY FILMMAKING FOR FILMMAKERS is right for you. This class is most suited for writers, directors, and actors who are looking to learn to produce their own work (documentary, and other types of content creators are welcome and encouraged!). Call it a class in becoming a multi-hyphenate filmmaker. This class is a deeper, more philosophical dive into the core principles of filmmaking, and offers a much more individualize curriculum based on the types of content that students will be tackling. You’ll come out of this class ready to roll on whatever idea you bring in at the start.

DO You offer in-person classes?

At the moment all my classes are going to be online to make them more accessible to people outside of Los Angeles. The goal of JMVF is to make video production accessible to as many people as possible, and give people of all walks of life the confidence to bring their ideas to life. Online courses make that possible!

In the future, in-person classes may become more feasible, but for now, it’ll just be online! But it won’t be your typical online class where you just sit there muted for two hours while I talk at you!

Do I have to take your beginners class in order to take your intermediate class?

Nope! But I would say that the intermediate class is gonna be very tough if you have zero experience with production! Feel free to shoot me an email if you’re not sure which class you want to take!
